It has often been written that ‘play is a child’s work’, with reference to the original pioneers of play, such as Piaget, Montessori, and Steiner. This statement held as much truth then as it does now, though today, due to advances in neurological research, it is possible to prove how important it is for children to play and indeed how this is the most crucial factor in their development, learning, and well-being. Scientists can now actually see when and how cognitive development takes place, as children’s brains literally light up when they play, especially in natural outdoor environments.

Play is a biological process that nature has programmed children to do. It is the way that they explore and find out about their world, learn about how things work, and why things happen. Curiosity drives them to learn and follow their own interests, playing and learning in particular ways, unique to them. It is important that we understand this process as adults, if we are to effectively support young children’s learning, knowing how to resource environments, interact when necessary, join in if asked, and know when to step back and observe, in order to learn more.

The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

  1. To gain knowledge and understanding of the neuro-scientific research behind play and cognitive development
  2. To understand the types of play experiences that best support holistic development
  3. To consider how adults can best support young children’s learning through play
