In your setting, it is very possible that one of the children you work with has been witness to domestic abuse, or that one of the parents has been a victim of domestic abuse. Domestic abuse can have a negative impact on children, but before dealing with that you must understand domestic violence and abuse.

This course will look at what domestic violence is and the different types of abuse you may witness. It will then detail how it affects the children and what you can do to help – be that reporting the abuse yourself or helping someone else to report it.



The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

  1. To understand what domestic violence is
  2. To learn whether domestic abuse is gender specific
  3. To understand the different types of abuse
  4. To learn why it might not be reported
  5. To understand the main aspects of how it affects children
  6. To learn the specific policy around abuse
  7. To understand how to report it/how to help people report it


This course will ensure your practice is in line with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage, The Early Years Framework and The Foundation Phase. It will also support your continuous professional development in line with the Early Years Teachers Standards.
