Child development refers to the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur in human beings. This happens between birth and the end of adolescence, as the individual progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy. It is a continuous process with a predictable sequence yet has a unique course for every child. When working with children who have special needs, childcare providers need to realise that each child and each disability is unique. For example, a child with visual impairments has different needs to a child with behavioural challenges.
This course will provide an overview of the different development needs, the impact on the child and practical methods and theoretical concepts to support their development.
